DAY TRIP: a visit to my craftsmen (a.k.a the guitar dude)

After contemplating for quite some time over my sketches, I was introduced to Wayan Sutabayu through a designer friend when we were working on an Aman project. Pak Bayu and his group of craftsmen have worked on several different types of products, from home shrines to decorative boxes, and, recently, custom-order guitars, all from wood (of the vast species available locally) and the occasional bone or mother-of-pearl decals. Having worked on larger-scale products, a ring project was new and arguably alien for them, but they pulled through beautifully (I shouldn’t be surprised. You should’ve seen the details on the stuff they make.)

I worked with them through the design process, as the material itself was a bit new to me—being from the city I was more accustomed to working on drawings from behind the desk rather than actually experiencing the on-hand working process.

On normal days (other days they are not forced to make rings and q-tip containers) they resume their work on fulfilling guitar orders from all over the world. They work while listening to Muddy Waters. They’re awesome.

‘Til next visit!
